Ocean & Waters Ambassador #3 of the year 2026 (Open Call #3)

From October 2025 to March 2026, the school ran the inspiring “Blue Team for the Danube” project. During this six-month period, the Danube was transformed into a living classroom. More than 450 students took part in practical scientific activities, explored biodiversity, campaigned for the environment, took part in cultural workshops and collaborated internationally.

All of these activities were designed to strengthen ocean and water literacy while encouraging sustainable behaviours.

Activities implemented:

The Danube was placed at the heart of student life, and some of the main activities that were implemented were:

  • One of the most impactful initiatives within the project was the training of 13 student eco-guides aged 15–17. These students became ambassadors for environmental protection, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable lifestyles. The eco-guides organised awareness campaigns in eight partner schools across Galați County, reaching more than 200 students through presentations, quizzes, workshops, and interactive activities. They also led public information campaigns during International Wetlands Day and World Water Day, speaking directly with citizens about pollution prevention, water conservation, and the importance of wetlands for climate resilience and biodiversity.

  • Students explored water treatment processes during educational visits to the Water Treatment Plant in Galați and the Water Quality Laboratory of the Water Management System. They learned how drinking water is purified, how pollution affects aquatic ecosystems, and why responsible water consumption matters.

  • Scientific learning was further strengthened through collaboration with „Dunărea de Jos” University. Students visited the REXDAN research vessel, worked with university researchers, and carried out practical experiments analysing water quality using professional testing kits.

  • Students visited the Village Museum in Galați to discover the traditions of fishing communities and participated in intergenerational workshops with elderly community members, learning traditional sewing, weaving, and fishing customs specific to the Danube region.

  • During study visits to „Balta Mică a Brăilei” Natural Park and near the Măcin Mountains National Park, students discovered local biodiversity, observed protected flora and fauna, and participated in environmental treasure hunts and ecological clean-up activities.

  • Second-grade students used LEGO robotics kits to develop engineering and programming skills while exploring environmental themes linked to water sustainability. Their work culminated in participation in the regional stage of the First Lego League Romania competition held in Galați.

It was exciting to work with researchers, participate in field activities, and become an eco-guide. I felt that our ideas and actions could really make a positive impact on our school and community.” – said Evelina Chiciuc, student from 10th grade.

Twinning activities

International cooperation became another important aspect of the project through the eTwinning initiative ‘Eco Explorers – Little Scientists on a Discovery’. Working alongside partner schools from various countries, students explored topics such as water, renewable energy, forests, biodiversity and Earth Day, all the while honing their digital, communication and scientific inquiry skills.

The school also collaborated with partners from Slovakia to create an international Danube calendar featuring photographs illustrating the river’s beauty across different European regions.
