Meet the schools: Muğla Technology College

Ocean & Waters Ambassador #3 of the year 2026 (Open Call #3)

The second place in the last and final edition of the Ocean & Waters Ambassadors competition goes to Muğla Technology College, located in the city of Muğla, Türkiye. From October 2025 to March 2026, the school ran the inspiring “BLUE WAVES – Small Steps, Big Waves” project.

All of these activities were designed to strengthen ocean and water literacy while encouraging sustainable behaviours.

Activities implemented:

Muğla Technology College delivered a rich and diverse programme combining interdisciplinary workshops, field visits, and hands-on water literacy activities. Students had the chance to learn from experts on climate change, ocean pollution, marine ecosystems, and sustainability, enriching their understanding of their environment. Yet it was the project’s deep integration into the local ecosystem that truly set it apart. Through extensive collaboration with local authorities, research institutions, and community organisations, students gained a concrete and meaningful understanding of the environment in which they live and grow, seeing firsthand that the people and institutions around them are actively committed to building a more sustainable future.

  • Sea Turtle Research, Rescue and Rehabilitation Center (DEKAMER) visit: Students visited DEKAMER, where volunteers shared their experience keeping night watch on beaches during the sea turtle nesting season.

  • Experimental aquarium: Students designed and built a self-cleaning ecosystem model, replicating natural water layers and a complete water purification cycle. The aquarium is now permanently installed at the school.

  • Beekeeping training: Students received hands-on beekeeping training, including practical experience with hive division of labour and honey harvesting methods.

  • Water conservation drip irrigation system: A water conservation plan was developed for the school’s organic garden. A needs-based drip irrigation system and a small rainwater harvesting model were successfully installed on site.

  • Waste facility visits: Students observed waste separation processes and electricity generation from municipal waste at a facility supplying approximately 3,000 homes.

Twinning activities

In keeping with their commitment to making their project as European and impactful as possible, Muğla Technology College registered on both the EU4Ocean Platform and the eTwinning portal. The school built strong connections with a Romanian partner school, developing a twinning initiative focused on access to clean and healthy food through joint online lesson plans. Through this collaboration, the school broadened the scope of their project to encompass water justice and environmental literacy.

Network of European Blue Schools

While carrying out its blue project, the Muğla Technology College took the opportunity to apply for recognition as a Blue School by the Network of European Blue Schools. We’re pleased to announce that they have successfully earned this certification. The school further expanded its engagement by joining international educational networks, including the Global School and Climate Action School programmes.

Dissemination activities

The school presented its project at a dedicated public conference that brought together 300 community members, expert speakers, and local press, serving as the project’s primary public-facing event. The project was also featured in 9 local newspaper articles, demonstrating its genuine roots in and resonance with the local community.
