Meet the schools series

Meet the schools: The Lale Kemal Kılıç secondary school

Let’s make waves for our Ocean & Waters Ambassador #1 of the Year 2024!

Our Ocean & Waters Ambassador is the Lale Kemal Kılıç secondary school, located in the city of Gemlik in Türkiye. This Turkish school has won the hearts of the majority of voters and is the official Winner of the contest!

From September 2024 to February 2025, the Lale Kemal Kılıç secondary school embarked on an exciting journey through its blue project “We Wasted the World’s Water” (Worst). Over the course of six months, the teachers carried out 16 activities with their students and the local community to empower children as agents of change.

Activities:

The activities were really diverse, ranging from tree planting to domestic waste collection:

  • On the topic of plastic waste, the teachers raised awareness about environmental pollution by organising beach clean-up activities with the students.

  • But the waste collected was not simply thrown away and recycled! The children and their teachers prepared exhibitions to show the extent of the pollution to the local community by displaying the collected waste.

  • At home, the children were also engaged in an environmental campaign and collected 300 litters of used domestic oil to be converted into environmentally friendly products such as biodiesel.

  • Painting and poetry competitions were also held to raise awareness about climate change and pollution. A great way to express their creativity for a good cause!

  • Last but not least, the students carried out tree planting activities and planted more than 700 saplings in forest areas, school gardens and surrounding areas.

Thanks to the SHORE program, environmental awareness in local communities increased by 70%!

Collaboration

In order to fully implement the project, the Lale Kemal Kılıç secondary school joined forces with the Gemlik Municipality and the Bursa Faculty of Marine and Fisheries. By combining their expertise, the project was successfully implemented, empowering students as agents of change while preserving the natural beauty of Gemlik.

Collaboration

During the implementation of its blue project, the Lale Kemal Kılıç secondary school applied to be recognized as a Blue School by the Network of European Blue Schools.

The SHORE team is delighted to hear that their application has been successful!
